Injured in an accident in Cyprus? Know your legal rights

· ACP LEGALS

If you have been hurt in Cyprus because of someone else’s fault, even in part, you may be entitled to compensation. We act for residents and visitors in road traffic accidents, workplace injuries, slips and falls, injuries from defective products and medical negligence.

What you can claim

  • Medical and rehabilitation costs.
  • Lost income, now and in the future.
  • Pain and suffering.
  • Psychological harm.
  • Permanent disability.

If you were partly responsible, compensation may be reduced in proportion (contributory negligence).

What to do after an accident

  1. Get medical help and keep every report and receipt.
  2. Report the accident to the police or your employer.
  3. Collect evidence: photographs, names and contact details of witnesses.
  4. Speak to a lawyer before you talk to an insurer or sign anything.

Time limits

A claim must generally be brought within three years of the accident. Shorter deadlines can apply to claims against public authorities. For children, time starts running when they turn 18.

How a claim usually runs

  1. First consultation and review of the evidence.
  2. Notice to the person responsible and their insurer.
  3. Negotiation, often supported by expert medical reports.
  4. Proceedings in the District Court if the claim is not settled.

Most claims settle out of court when the injured person is properly represented.

If you are a visitor

Visitors can claim under Cyprus law when the accident happened in Cyprus. Depending on the case, EU rules on cross-border claims may also help.
